What's in the course?

The GP and Exercise Referral course is aimed at individuals who have experience in instructing exercise and are currently working within the Health and Fitness industry.

Medication and patient health care is primarily the responsibility of the GP, however specialists trained in exercise prescription now work in conjunction with health care professionals, such as GPs, to help manage and improve the conditions of patients.

The GP and Exercise Referral course will equip you with the confidence and knowledge to prescribe safe and effective exercise based on your clients needs.This course is a component of two programmes namely Advanced Personal Trainer and Total Immersion, but can also be taken separately.

The course covers:

• the Exercise Referral Scheme and the roles of the Department of Health and National Health Service
   
• physical activity and health promotion
   
• behavioural management
   
• health and lifestyle screening
   
• exercise prescription
   
• fitness testing
   
• orthopaedic diseases such as arthritis and osteoporosis
   
• cardiovascular diseases such as hypertension and coronary heart disease (CHD)
   
• metabolic diseases such as diabetes
   
• pulmonary diseases such as asthma
   
• raised cholesterol and obesity
   
• pharmacological management
