Back exercise testing

Back testing is important to assess how your back is progressing, to help make movement easier.

Considerations for back testing.

The considerations for lower back pain exercise testing are simple is the patient ready to safely begin exercising?

This means that any type of lower back pain exercise testing will focus on a functional test designed to assess the strength and capabilities of the lumbar area.

Key to back pain.

However, there is more to it than that. Lack of conditioning is a major factor in many low back injuries, therefore those working in rehab are often faced with patients who are severely deconditioned or even obese. This means that they also have to make assessments based on general conditioning as much as anything specifically related to the lumbar area.

Additionally, as research shows that almost any type of exercise can produce similar improvements in terms of pain relief, pain frequency and ability to perform daily tasks, the most important issue is often getting someone active, as opposed to a specific focus on exercises for the lumbar area.

In summary.

Thus the assessment process will involve a patient history, an examination, and a functional capacity test of overall condition such as the shuttle walking test. It is only in conjunction with these that specific assessment such as the sit and reach test or measures of lumbar strength have real significance.
