What if I want to work in a health club?

There are specialist qualifications for instructors and lifeguards, while for those running the whole facility, there are management qualifications that will enable you to work as a leisure centre manager.

The typical route to leisure centre manager positions involves one of two routes:

  • Studying for a foundation degree, BTEC HND or degree before seeking a management role

  • Working in the field first, then working towards professional qualifications

Good choices of foundation degrees, BTEC HNDs and degrees include subjects such as:

  • Leisure studies
  • Recreation management
  • Sports science
  • Sports and leisure management

As the entry requirements for courses vary widely, be sure to check with colleges or universities individually to see what you would need to be eligible for a particular course.

Duties are varied and can include the day-to-day operation of facilities such as swimming pools, sports halls, gyms, and outdoor facilities. This can include:

  • Managing staff and payroll
  • Scheduling activities and events
  • Budgeting
  • PR/Marketing of events
  • Health and Safety

For qualified applicants, opportunities exist in private leisure centres and health club chains, local authority centres, workplace facilities, hotel gyms, and outdoor activities centres.
