Your basic role as a FItness Instructor is to motivate, educate, and plan group workouts for varying age groups and abilities. Below is a basic fitness instructor profile that may vary from each health club and fitness centre.

If you decide to work full-time as an instructor, you usually will work on a rota/ shift basis taking up 35-40 hours a week. Most group classes cover weekends, early mornings and evenings. As well as working full time often instructors work on a freelance or part time basis.

Most instructors find work in health clubs, gyms and leisure centres. But as a self-employed instructor, you can conduct classes in community centres or school gyms to suit your needs and the needs of your client.

JOB TITLE : FITNESS INSTRUCTOR
REPORTING TO : CENTRE MANAGER

JOB PURPOSE:Your fitness instructor profile shows that you will work with groups and individuals to help them maintain a better working practise with their health and fitness. The activities you work in can involve weight training, aquacise, Pilates, keep fit, or yoga as well as specialist groups such as children, people with disabilities and older adults.

In your position, you could also find yourself providing tips on healthy lifestyle and nutrition and if you choose to work at a small club, you could also work in reception and help with health and safety checks.

ACADEMIC REQUIREMENTS:

All instructors are required to have a basic REPs level 2 which can be gained through accredited providers throughout the UK. You will also be required to have a first aid certificate (including CPR) and public liability insurance .

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Showing various levels of routines to clients in a class setting
  • Leading classes in group exercise including aerobics, spinning or circuit training
  • Creating personal exercise programmes
  • Conducting consultations and exercise assessments with new clients
