Introduction
Muscles often contain specific areas of tightness, perhaps due to fibrotic changes or to scar tissue. Whilst useful, whole muscle stretching is and act of gross rather than specific stretching and does not target specific sites of tightness. By localizing the stretch to a particular region of muscle, Soft Tissue Release helps to gently but firmly encourage specifically tight fibers to stretch. It combines both active and passive stretching.
Soft Tissue Release is performed through clothing.
The technique works by "fixing" part of the muscle. To do this the instructor may use their fists, elbows or forearm, for example, and in doing so creates a new insertion point. This prevents some parts of the muscle from moving.
The technique may also be used to help assess tightness in a muscle. Throughout the workshop you will be encouraged to practice using the technique as a tool for assessment in addition to using it as a tool for stretching, and to both give and receive treatment.
